Tornike Rijvadze - April 9 is the Day of Sacrifice, Freedom and Victory

Tornike Rijvadze, the chairman of the government of Ajara, paid tribute to the memory of the deceased on April 9.

‘April 9 is the day of sacrifice, freedom and victory. Today we honor the memory of the heroes who died for the motherland and at the same time, we celebrate the restoration of our country's independence. Thanks for the freedom’ – Tornike Rijvadze said.

34 years have passed since the historical events of April 9, 1989. The peaceful demonstration organized for Georgia's independence was brutally dispersed by Special Forces of the Soviet Army, which killed 21 civilians.

Later, on April 9, 1991, the Supreme Council announced the restoration of Georgia's state independence.
